Pirates hit blackjack on the Rustlers, 21-0

COSTA MESA -- While it's been a rough stretch of the 2017 softball season, the Orange Coast College Pirates never lost their winning spirit or enthusiasm and on Wednesday, their hard work was rewarded with a 21-0 romp over rival Golden West College.

The Pirates (7-27, 4-14 in Orange Empire Conference), who saw their 11-game losing streak come to a thunderous end, needed just four innings worth of at-bats to clobber 19 hits, while GWC (0-29, 0-18) committed eight turnovers and managed just one hit and one walk at the plate all afternoon.

Anna Marin went 2-for-3 with three runs and five RBI for Coast. Gretchen Hom added three hits a run and four RBI, while Briana Covarrubias tacked on three hits, three runs and an RBI and Cayla Ezelle notched three hits, two runs and two RBI.

The Pirates jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and added four runs in the second, eight runs in the third and four more in the fourth before the game was called after the five-inning, eight-run mercy rule.

Carlie Chaulsett-Utley picked up her fifth win of the season and faced just one batter beyond the minimum, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and six strikeouts.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Saddleback College (2 p.m.) before returning home to host Rio Hondo on Saturday in a nonconference matchup, beginning at 11 a.m.
