Pirates snap skid with 9-1 win over rival Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- The offense came alive and the pitching went to work for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates snapped an eight-game losing skid with a solid 9-1, six-inning win over visiting Golden West on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pirates (3-8, 1-3 in Orange Empire Conference) used a pair of three-run innings in the fifth and sixth to pull away from the rival Rustlers (0-10, 0-5) as the hosts slugged 12 hits, including five extra-base hits.

Linnea Donahugh went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs and two RBI to lead the Pirate offense, while Jenna Hernandez added three hits from the leadoff spot. Cayla Ezelle smacked a two-run hit and Daria Bair and Kalin Etheridge each added RBI-hits as the Pirate lineup produced up and down the order.

Sophomore righty Montana Roelvink picked up her first win of the season after pitching five solid innings, allowing no runs on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

After Coast cashed in a run on a GWC error in the first, the Pirates made it 3-0 on an RBI-triple by Donahugh and a run-scoring passed ball.

In the fifth, the Pirates tacked on three more runs on a two-run double by Ezelle and an RBI-single by Bair.

After GWC broke up the shutout with a run in the top of the sixth, the Pirates ended the game in the bottom of the frame with RBI-doubles by Donahugh and Etheridge and an RBI-grounder by Briana Covarrubias, ending the contest via the mercy rule.

Coast will play at Saddleback on Friday at 2 p.m. before returning to the OCC Softball Complex on Saturday against San Bernardino Valley on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
