Pirates top Lasers, 72-60, to claim third place at IVC tourney

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team topped host Irvine Valley, 72-60, to win the third-place game of the Irvine Valley tournament, which concluded on Sunday at IVC.
All-tournament selection Chyann Pendergrass contributed in every facet of the game for the Pirates (8-4) with six points, six rebounds, 10 assists and two steals against the Lasers (5-5).
Michelle Wu led the offense with 17 points, thanks to 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range. Overall, Coast drained 14 3-pointers and shot 41.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Jenna Miramontez added 12 points, while Sydney Diggs added 10 points.
For the Lasers, Kydell Perason, led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds.
In the tourney opener on Friday, Coast opened things with a 65-57 win over Rio Hondo. After a deadlocked opening quarter (14-14), OCC held the Roadrunners to just six points in the second and grabbed a 29-20 lead at the break and never lost the lead the rest of the way.
Pendergrass was the leader for the Pirates with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Wu added 11 points and four assists. Miramontez and Sarah Nunes came off of the bench and the duo combined for 17 points and eight rebounds.
In the championship semifinal, the points were hard to come by for OCC as the Pirates fell, 64-53 to Long Beach City College.
Coast shot just 30 percent from the floor (20-of-67) and managed just three first-quarter points, which set the table for the rest of the contest.
Elizabeth Sakamoto notched a double-double for Coast with 14 points and 12 rebounds, but no other Pirate teammate hit double figures in the game.
Coast will return to action on Monday, Dec. 19 at home against Cerritos College in the opening round of the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
