Pirates struggle late in home loss to Chargers

COSTA MESA -- It was a fourth quarter to forget for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates fell to visiting Cypress College, 72-59, on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Leading 46-42 after three quarters, the Pirates (13-8, 1-2 in Orange Empire Conference) went over eight minutes of the fourth without the benefit of a made field goal and settled for just five made free throws over that span. Meanwhile, the Chargers (14-5, 2-0), outscored the Pirates 14-5 over that same span and never trailed the rest of the way.

Coast was forced to foul down the stretch, a plan that looked good as the Chargers managed to hit just 9-of-23 from the free-throw line over the first three quarters. But Cypress turned things around from the charity stripe and calmly drained 15-of-17 in the fourth quarter and outscored Coast 30-13 over the final 10 minutes.

Michelle Wu and Chyann Pendergrass each had 18 points for Coast, while Sydney Driggs added 11 and Danielle Obong tossed in 10.

For the Chargers, Sylvia Garcia was a one-person wrecking crew, scoring 24 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to go along with five steals. Dominique Culhno added 20 points and four steals.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 5 p.m. before returning to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday against Irvine Valley, also at 5 p.m.
