Pirates outlast Tigers in OT

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team made the trip to Riverside worth while as the Pirates pulled out of town with an 81-74 overtime win over the host Tigers on Friday night.

In a game that saw no lead bigger than eight points, both teams battled it out through four quarters and beyond.

Finally, in the OT period, the Pirates 13-7, 1-1 in Orange Empire Conference) shut out the Tigers (13-5, 0-1) for nearly the entire five-minute session before a made free throw with 34 seconds left spoiled that plan. By then, Coast had scored eight straight points and was never threatened again.

Michelle Wu led OCC with 21 points and four assists, while Sydney Driggs added 17, including six in the overtime period. Off the bench, the duo of Megan Lewis and Megan McCullough combined for 14 points and 14 rebounds.

For the Tigers, Dejan Wright came off the bench to lead the way with 15 points, while Chiderah Uzowuru added 13 points and Darria Hewitt chipped in 11 to go along with nine rebounds. Riverside, which out-rebounded Coast, 58-38, were led by Paradise Hanchett with 17 boards.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday as they host Cypress, beginning at 5 p.m.
