Pirates top Lasers to claim third place at Ventura tournament

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team took 2-of-3 at last weekend's Ventura College Tournament and wrapped up the nonconference portion of the schedule with a 76-65 win over Irvine Valley in the third-place game on Friday.

Coast (12-6) started the tourney with a solid 86-48 win over Allan Hancock College on Wednesday. OCC outscored the Bulldogs 53-30 in the first half and cruised from there. Michelle Wu led the way with six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points. In all, Coast drained 18 3-pointers in the game and outscored AHC by 30 from beyond the arc. Danielle Obong added 15 points, while Sydney Driggs tossed in 11 off the bench.

In the championship semifinals, Coast came out cold against L.A. Valley and lost, 81-66. Wu again was strong with a game-high 21 points, while Chyann Pendergrass added 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists and Bela Raimondi chipped in 14 points off the bench.

The loss dropped Coast into the third-place game against IVC and there, another strong first half propelled the Pirates to victory. Leading 18-15 after the opening quarter, OCC outscored the Lasers, 30-16, in the second half to pull away.

Obong drained six 3-pointers on her way to a season-best 29 points, while Wu added 17 to earn all-tournament honors. 

Coast will open Orange Empire Conference play at home on Wednesday against Saddleback College, beginning at 5 p.m.
