Obong's 19 leads Pirates past Hornets

FULLERTON -- Danielle Obong scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Orange Coast College women's basketball team to a 65-53 Orange Empire Conference win over host Fullerton on Friday night.

Obong had the hot hand for the Pirates (15-9, 3-3 in OEC), connecting on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-5 from 3-point range and a perfect 3-for-3 at the free-throw line.

Michelle Wu added 17 points, while Megan McCullough came off the bench to score 12 points and grab six rebounds.

For the Hornets (9-12, 1-4), Melody Thomsen had 14 points, Tianna Buford added 12 points and Tristian Johns tossed in 11.

Coast took control of the game late in the first quarter. With less than two minutes remaining in the frame, the Pirates led by a bucket, but used an 18-3 run that carried deep in to the second quarter to blow the game open.

The lead, which grew to as many as 27 with 51 seconds left in the third quarter, was never threatened again by the Hornets, despite outscoring the Pirates in the fourth.

OCC will have its bye night on Wednesday, but will return to action on Friday at Saddleback College on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. Coast's next home contest will be on Wednesday, Feb. 1 against Riverside, also at 7 p.m.
