Pirates fall in double-OT to Cypress

CYPRESS -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team battled first-place Cypress and pushed the Chargers into double-overtime, but in the end, the Pirates came up short and fell, 78-71, on Friday night at Cypress College.

Sydney Driggs had 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Michelle Wu added 21 for the Pirates (17-10, 5-4 in Orange Empire Conference).

Monique Mesa came off the bench and led the Chargers (19-6, 7-1) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Alyssa Movchan added 17 points, while Sylvia Garcia tossed in 16 points and grabbed nine boards.

Coast led by as many as 12 points with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter before the Chargers outscored the Pirates 22-11 the rest of the quarter and trailed by just one heading into the fourth.

With 1:20 left in regulation, a Wu layup put Coast up 60-55, but a 3-pointer by Garcia and a made layup by Mesa evened the score at 60 and sent the game into overtime.

Leading by one with 13 seconds left, Chyann Pendergrass stepped up to the free-throw line and made her first attempt, but missed her second and after a Chargers' timeout, Mesa again tied the game at 67 when she drained a jumper with four seconds remaining, pushing the contest into a second OT.

There, only a three-point play by Megan Lewis and a made free throw by Danielle Obong was all the Pirates could muster up as the Chargers outscored Coast, 11-4, to prevail.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at home against Santa Ana College, beginning at 7 p.m.
