Pirates tie, win at Ventura Tournament

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team picked up a tie and a win to kick off the 2014 season at the Ventura College Tournament on Thursday and Friday.

In the opener, the Pirates battled San Diego Mesa College to a 1-1 tie. Coast took the lead in the first half when McKayla Carter ripped a free kick into the back of the net for the first goal of the 2014 season.

But the Olympians picked up a goal in the 80th minute to even the score. OCC goalkeepers Karsen Camarena and Jordyn Gressier combined for five saves as each worked a half of play.

On Friday, Coast jumped out early and held on for a 2-1 win over Hartnell College. Samantha Sandzimier took a pass from Manuea Ramirez in the 33rd minute and scored to give OCC a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes into the second half, Coast made it 2-0 when Adria Bennion scored off of an assist by Petra Tobin

Hartnell made it 2-1 just two minutes later, but the Pirates held on from there. Gressier played the first half and did not allow a goal with three saves, while Camarena notched one save in the second half.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Rio Hondo, beginning at 2 p.m. OCC's first home match will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 9 against Chaffey at 3 p.m.
