Pirates silence Gauchos under the lights

COSTA MESA -- It only took the first scoring chance for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team to take the lead and keep it as the Pirates hung on for a 1-0 win over nationally-ranked Saddleback on Tuesday night under the lights of LeBard Stadium.

The Gauchos (4-1-0, 0-1-0 in Orange Empire Conference), ranked 11th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, watched the Pirates (3-1-1, 1-0-0) take the lead in the third minute of play when Jordan Bradley controlled a loose ball deep in the Gauchos' zone and fired a perfect pass to teammate Danielle Dapello, who picked her spot and beat goalkeeper Alexandria Scott to give Coast a 1-0 lead.

Despite lots of offensive firepower by the Gauchos, the Pirates kept the guests off of the scoreboard the entire night with a solid display of team defense and just enough offensive push to keep the guests honest.

Pirates' goalkeeper Jordyn Gressier came up with four saves en route to the shutout win.

Saddleback pushed back hard in the second half and earned five corner kicks over the final 45 minutes of play, but the OCC defense withstood the barrage and came away with the win.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Fullerton College.
