Pirates zapped by Chargers, 1-0

COSTA MESA -- A gritty effort by the Orange Coast College women's soccer team came up short as the Pirates dropped a 1-0 Orange Empire Conference decision to visiting Cypress College on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite playing with several players hurt and going up against a Charger team that was ranked eighth in the state, the Pirates (7-7-2, 5-6-1 in conference) had several chances to tie or even top their guests.

Cypress (11-1-4, 8-1-3) scored the game's lone goal when a corner kick landed among a plethora of players vying for control. Finally, sophomore Elizabeth Gutierrez got to the ball first and ripped a shot on goal that found the back of the net, putting the Chargers ahead for good.

That lead was threatened throughout most of the second half, especially in the 77th minute when a cross-pass found the foot of OCC sophomore McKayla Carter, who beat the Chargers on the near side of the goal, but the ball rang off of the goal post, keeping the Pirates off of the scoreboard.

OCC goalkeeper Karsen Camarena notched seven saves, while Cypress netminder Paulina Serna came through with five saves.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Irvine Valley College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home contest will be on Tuesday against Santiago Canyon, also at 3 p.m.
