Pirates blank Irvine Valley in the heat

IRVINE -- On a day that "featured" triple-digit heat, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team braved the elements and picked up a 2-0 Orange Empire Conference win at Irvine Valley College on Tuesday.

It wasn't ideal soccer weather, but the Pirates (8-4-4 overall, 6-3-2 in OEC) made the most of it and used a first-half goal and a second-half goal to pull away from the pesky Lasers (2-10-5, 2-5-4).

In the 28th minute, Ciara Brennan fed a nice pass to teammate Tiffany Chantler, then avoided a charging IVC goalkeeper before scoring into the empty net, putting OCC in front, 1-0.

Both teams went back and forth with each earning decent scoring opportunities, but the score remained 1-0 until the final three minutes.

There, Madison Crowley took a pass from Madison Benjamin and ripped a long shot into the back of the net to seal the win for the Pirates.

Alison Marlow was strong in goal for Coast, stopping seven shots en route to the shutout victory. IVC's Marissa Banos had five saves.

OCC will play at Fullerton on Friday (3 p.m.) before returning to the OCC Soccer Complex on Tuesday to host Santa Ana (3 p.m.).
