COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team had the tables turned on Tuesday as visiting Santiago Canyon returned the favor by edging the Pirates, 2-1, in an Orange Empire Conference contest.
The Hawks (11-2-1, 8-1-1 in OEC), winners of eight straight since the Pirates (7-4-4, 5-3-2) topped SCC 2-0 back on Sept. 15, used a pair of goals by Jenny Ramirez to prevail in a tightly-contested matchup.
In the sixth minute of play, a tripping foul inside the OCC penalty area resulted in a penalty kick opportunity and Ramirez did not miss, putting the Hawks up early, 1-0.
The Pirates continued to push and in the 17th minute, a foul just outside the SCC penalty area resulted in a free kick and there, freshman Aubrey Izabal ripped a shot over the wall past SCC goalkeeper Siera Pedroza (five saves) to even the contest at 1.
Both teams had a couple of high-end scoring chances but did not convert and the scored remained 1-1 after the first half.
Santiago Canyon came up with more energy in the second half and in the 69th minute, a cross pass from Angelica Ortega found the head of Ramirez, who headed the ball back to the far side of the goal and scored to put the Hawks up 2-1.
In the final minutes of play, OCC's Lupe Rodriguez sent a beautiful feed across the goal area to a wide open OCC teammate, but her shot sailed over the net, keeping SCC ahead.
OCC goalkeeper Alison Marlow had a strong contest and came up with five saves.
The Pirates will look to snap their two-match losing skid with a road matchup at Irvine Valley College on Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m.
