Pirates settle for 1-1 tie with Rio Hondo

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team battled visiting Rio Hondo College to a 1-1 draw at the OCC Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams managed to play strong defense, but allowed one goal each on a pair of innocent looking attempts.

Coast (2-1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Jane McDonald lob-wedged a high-arching shot from 30-yards out. Rio Hondo goalkeeper Izella Delgadillo had the ball go through her outstretched hands and the shot fell into the back of the net, putting the Pirates out in front.

Just 12 minutes into the second half, RHC (1-1-1) lobbed a shot towards a pile of people in front of the Pirates' goal. The ball found its way into the back of the net off of a Roadrunner player and the score was evened at 1.

From there, both teams had a couple of decent scoring chances, but were denied the rest of the way.

OCC netminder Alison Marlow came up with seven saves, while Delgadillo and Wendie Umanzor combined for three saves.

Coast will return to action on Tuesday at home against Saddleback College, beginning at 3 p.m.
