Pirates roll to 3-0 win over Dons

SANTA ANA -- Every win is a good win and in this year's muddled up Orange Empire Conference, every win will be an IMPORTANT win as well. On Friday, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team kept the victories coming with a solid 3-0 road win against Santa Ana.

With the victory, Coast (5-1-4 overall, 3-0-2 in OEC) remained tied with Fullerton for second place in the OEC, just two points behind Santiago Canyon (4-1-1 in OEC), winners of four straight after falling to the Pirates on Sept. 15. Only four points separates the first-place Hawks from the fifth-place Dons (6-4, 3-2) in the standings.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at home against fourth-place Cypress (3-1-1 in OEC) in another crucial conference matchup.

Despite a scoreless first half of play against the Dons, OCC was strong and showed signs of getting the upper hand. Finally, in the 55th minute, OCC fired a shot towards goal that was stopped, but Aubrey Izabal was at the right place at the right time and buried the rebound into the back of the net, putting the Pirates, up, 1-0.

Santa Ana remained close, thanks in large part to six big saves from goalkeeper Breana Martinez, but finally, in the 84th minute, Sabrina Chantler took a nice feed from Lupe Rodriguez and scored to put Coast up, 2-0.

Right before the end of regulation, Rodriguez found the back of the net herself to close out the scoring for the Pirates. Alison Marlow earned the shutout win with a pair of saves, while the OCC defense played stellar team soccer in front of her.
