Pirates capture Orange Empire Conference title!

IRVINE -- It has been a 2016 season to remember for the Orange Coast College women's tennis team and on Tuesday, the Pirates put the cherry on top of the sundae by capturing the Orange Empire Conference title with a 5-4 win over host Irvine Valley.

The win wraps up the regular season for the Pirates, who finish 13-2 overall, 7-1 in the OEC. Both IVC (6-5, 5-2) and Saddleback (9-7, 5-2) have one match remaining against each other on Thursday to determine second and third place.

In singles play, OCC jumped out to a 4-2 lead as Clarisa Colling (6-3, 6-3) and Karen Trinh (6-3, 6-2) rolled at the Nos. 1-2 spots.

At No. 6, Janine Panas earned a 6-2, 6-5 (ret.) win, while at No. 4, Lauren Saito pulled out a three-set win, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Coast needed just one win in doubles to claim the conference crown and the team of Colling/Trinh came through with an 8-2 victory.

The Pirates will return to IVC for the Orange Empire Conference Championships, set for April 7-9.
