Pirate beach VB pair advances to SoCal Regionals

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball duo of Jadelyn Forgiarini and Kacey Mathieson qualified for the upcoming Southern California Regional tournament after their strong showing at the Orange Empire Conference Championships last weekend at Irvine Valley College.

The trek to regionals for Forgiarini and Mathieson began with a straight-set win over Santa Ana College's Destinee Blue and Hannah DeGrasse, 21-17, 21-13.

Following a tough three-set loss to Riverside's Marcella Rodriguez and Julia Balancier (7-21, 21-19, 15-9), Forgiarini and Matheson pressed on and picked up a dominating win over Saddleback's Landry Armstrong and Nicolette Spriggs (21-12, 21-9).

From there, with a trip to the Regionals on the line, Forgiarini and Matheson took on Cypress College's Jane Woodward and Brianna Gerogopoulos. After stumbling in the opening set, the OCC duo battled back and won, 18-21, 21-14, 19-17 to keep their season alive.

With the win, Forgiarini and Mathieson will take on MiraCosta College's Michelle Mason and Claudia Mathews in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Tournament, set for Friday at Irvine Valley College.

As a team, the Pirates advanced to the opening round of the Southern California Regional playoffs as well, but the Pirates (7-10 overall) were eliminated with a pair of 4-1 losses to El Camino and Irvine Valley on Tuesday at Grenada Beach.
