Pirates post back-to-back shutout wins over Dons, Lasers

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College baseball team continued its dominance on the mound with back-to-back shutout road wins, topping Santa Ana 5-0 on Monday and Irvine Valley 6-0 on Tuesday.

Just how good has the Pirates' pitching been? over the last 40 innings of work, Coast has allowed TWO earned runs (0.45 ERA) while walking just nine and striking out 32.

In the win over the Dons, Jacob Hill pitched eight strong innings, allowing now runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. 

Cody Bruder went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Chris Iriart added two hits, including a solo home run and two RBI for the Pirate offense. Chris Blasing also slugged a solo home run for Coast (14-3, 2-1 in Orange Empire Conference).

The offense jumped out to an early lead as Coast scored two runs in the first and added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Against the Lasers, lefty Art Vidro pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, one walk and four strikeouts before Dominic Purpura shut down the Lasers over the final two innings.

Bruder (2-for-5, two runs) and Cody Nulph (2-for-3, one run) helped spark the offense, while Iriart again came through with three RBI for the afternoon, giving the sophomore first baseman 22 RBI for the season in just 17 games.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday at Riverside City College, beginning at 2 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Tuesday against Fullerton, also at 2 p.m.
