Pirates roll past Rustlers, 11-1

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- After struggling to find some offense on Tuesday, the Orange Coast College baseball team found plenty on Thursday and breezed past Golden West, 11-1, at Fred Hoover Field.

The Pirates (16-5, 4-3 in Orange Empire Conference) picked up a pair of three-run hits -- a bases-loaded triple by Tommy Bell and a bases-clearing double by Cody Nulph, to highlight their 11-run, 11-hit attack.

Robert Longtree boosted the bottom of OCC's lineup with two hits and three runs scored, while L. Grant Davis added two runs and an RBI.

That was plenty of offense for Pirate starter David Hill, who picked up his fifth win of the season after allowing just one run on seven hits with 11 strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Through the first round of OEC play, it's been a bit of a rough go-around for the Pirates, thanks to a pair of extra-inning losses and some offensive struggles at home (two runs over their last 22 innings at Wendell Pickens Field).

Despite the up-and-down start to conference play, Coast is still just one game out of first place, trailing Fullerton (15-5, 5-2) and in a logjam for second with Santa Ana (13-7, 4-3), Saddleback (12-7, 4-3) and Riverside (10-10, 4-3).

Coast will get the weekend off and will return to action on Tuesday at Cypress College (2 p.m.) before returning to Wendell Pickens Field for a rematch with the Chargers on Thursday (2 p.m.).
