Pirates split pair with Lasers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team dropped the third game of its three-game season series with Irvine Valley, 4-3 on Friday after posting a 3-1 win over the Lasers on Thursday.

In Friday's loss, Coast (20-7, 8-5 in Orange Empire Conference) rallied to tie the game at 3 in the bottom of the seventh only to see the Lasers (7-18, 3-10) take advantage of a bad-hop single and turn it into the eventual winning run.

In the top of the eighth, IVC had runners on first and second and two outs. OCC reliever David Wilson (0-2) coaxed a routine grounder to shortstop Cody Nulph for the third out, but the ball hit a divot in the infield and took a bad hop over the glove of Nulph into center field, scoring the runner from second to make it 4-3.

IVC reliever Jeremy Ibarra (1-0) came in and retired seven straight to pick up the win. Wilson pitched five effective innings of relief, allowing just two runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts, but took the loss for Coast.

Cody Bruder, L. Grant Davis and Nulph each had two hits for the Pirates, but the rest of the batting order went a combined 4-for-21 and the squad stranded 10 runners throughout the afternoon.

In Thursday's 3-1 win, OCC starter David Hill went the distance to improve to 7-0. The sophomore standout allowed one unearned run on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Chris Iriart and Daniel Delaney each had RBI singles in OCC's two-run sixth inning, putting the hosts ahead, 2-1. Davis added a sacrifice fly in the seventh for a much-needed insurance run.

Coast returns to acton on Tuesday at home against Riverside City College, beginning at 2 p.m.
