Pirates hammer Roadrunners

COSTA MESA -- It was a scorekeeper's nightmare on Friday at Wendell Pickens Field, but for the Orange Coast College baseball team, it was a day to empty the bench and the Pirates did, en route to a 15-1 nonconference win over visiting College of the Desert.

With a week-long break throughout the Orange Empire Conference, the Pirates (25-9) took advantage of the opportunity to mix and match their lineup and it worked, to the tune of 15 runs on 20 hits -- both season highs.

In all, both teams used a combined 42 players (14 pitchers) in the game.

Both teams traded solo runs early before the Pirates sent 16 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third and scored 11 times. Alec Friedman, who went 3-for-3 in the game, drove in two runs in the 11-run frame, as did Greg Espinosa and Chris Iriart, while single runs were driven in by Cody Nulph, Tommy Bell, Nick Kinsman, Cody Bruder and Justin Broussard.

Bell, Bruder, Broussard, Ryan Perez and Jake Thumm each had two hits in the game, with Bruder, Broussard, Thumm, Bell and Cody Nulph each scoring two runs.

Six pitchers -- Jason Broussard, Andrew Alvarez (2-1), Tanner Murphey, Art Vidro, Parker Manahan and Cody Maples -- combined to hold the Roadrunners (6-26) to just three hits and one unearned run with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

The Pirates will return to OEC action on Tuesday at home against Golden West, beginning at 2 p.m. Currently, Coast is tied with Santa Ana atop the standings at 12-7, with Cypress, Saddleback and Riverside each at 11-8.

The other OEC matchups for Tuesday are: Cypress at Santa Ana (2 p.m.), Saddleback at Riverside (2 p.m.) and Fullerton at Irvine Valley (2 p.m.).
