Offense stays strong for Pirates in win over Vikings

COSTA MESA -- Nine seems to be the favorite number for the Orange Coast College baseball team. For the fourth time this year and third time this week, the Pirates put a nine-spot on the scoreboard and defeated visiting Long Beach City College, 9-5, on Saturday at Wendell Pickens Field.

Coast (11-2) concluded a busy final week of nonconference play with four straight wins, including a 9-2 win over LBCC on Tuesday, a 9-3 victory over College of the Canyons and a 5-1 win at LBCC on Thursday.

The offense was successful up and down the Pirate lineup and was led by Tommy Bell, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Jake Thumm and Cody Bruder each had two RBI, while L. Grant Davis, Cody Nulph and Chris Iriart each had two hits in the 13-hit outburst.

Lefty Jacob Hill improved to 3-0 with a solid, six-inning effort on the mound, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. David Wilson earned his first save with two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Nulph and Iriart helped give OCC and quick 2-0 lead in the first with back-to-back, RBI-doubles, but the Vikings (3-7) answered back with two runs in the second to make it 2-2.

With Coast ahead, 3-2, Thumm came through with a two-run triple down the right field line in the bottom of the third, pushing the lead up to 5-2.

The Vikings were their own words enemy as five errors helped plate four unearned runs for the Pirates. Nick Wood took the loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) over 5 2/3 innings of work.

The Pirates will play at Southwestern College on Tuesday (2 p.m.) before opening up Orange Empire Conference play at home against Cypress College on Thursday at 2 p.m.
