Pirates take 2-of-3 at Cuesta

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Orange Coast College played three games at Cuesta College this past weekend and went 2-1 over the Cougars, winning the first two games, 3-1 and 9-1, before losing in the finale, 9-4.

After a rainout on Thursday, the Pirates and Cougars played a seven-inning/nine-inning doubleheader on Friday. In the opener, Coast's pitchers -- Jacob Hill, Dominic Purpura and David Wilson -- held the Cougars to just five hits and one run with nine strikeouts in the series-opening win.

Chris Iriart slugged a solo home run and Tommy Bell and Andrew Alvarez each added RBI-hits for the Pirates.

In the second game of the double-dip, Coast scored five runs in the third and added a pair of runs in the seventh and ninth innings for the win.

Cody Maples went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Chris Blasing added a two-run home run and Daniel Delaney chipped in three hits, a run and two RBI.

That was more than enough offense for David Hill, who earned his second win of the year with a five-inning effort. He allowed one unearned run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Jason Broussard, Tanner Murphey and Brian Bass threw the final four innings and allowed just three hits with seven Ks, giving the OCC pitchers 14 for the game.

In the series finale, Coast outhit Cuesta 12-8, but the Cougars picked up the big hits early on to avoid the sweep. Ryan Perez went 2-for-4, while Cody Nulph and Colin Yelich each added a hit and an RBI.

Coast will return home and host Southwestern College on Tuesday, beginning at 2 p.m.
