Pirates cruise to 9-3 win over Cougars

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team won its fifth straight game on Wednesday, defeating the College of the Canyons, 9-3, at Wendell Pickens Field.

L. Grant Davis went 1-for-4 with three RBI, Cody Bruder added two hits, a run and two RBI and Cody Maples contributed a hit, two runs and two RBI for the Pirates (9-2).

Starter Art Vidro (2-0) overcame some control issues and picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over six innings of work.

Coast took the lead for good over the Cougars (3-7) in the bottom of the second when Maples lined a double down the right-field line, scoring Jake Thumm and Colin Yelich. Three batters later, Davis followed up with a two-run single to make it 4-1.

From there, Coast added a pair of runs in the third, two more in the six and one in the seventh to pull away from the visiting Cougars.

OCC returns to action on Thursday at Long Beach City College (2 p.m.) before returning to Wendell Pickens Field on Saturday to host the Vikings at 12 p.m.
