Pirates make it two straight over Comets, 4-1

SAN MARCOS -- The Orange Coast College baseball team made it two in a row over the Palomar College Comets, thanks to a 4-1 win on Tuesday at PC.

Cody Nulph went 4-for-5 with a run scored and Chris Iriart went 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Pirates (2-0). Jake Thumm and Cody Bruder each added two hits as well, including a double and triple for Bruder.

The Pirate pitchers -- much like last week's season opener -- were dominant in their performances. Starter Art Vidro picked up the win, tossing five innings of no-hit ball with two walks and five strikeouts. Spencer Moran threw the next three innings and allowed just one run on two hits with three strikeouts before Joe Reta notched his first save with a scoreless ninth inning of work.

Coast scored single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first, Justin Broussard singled, advanced to third on a single by Nulph and scored on an RBI-single by Iriart.

In the second, Thumm singled with one out and scored on an RBI-triple to right off the bat of Bruder. Coast would score again in the sixth to make it 3-0 before the Comets finally found some offense late.

Palomar (0-4) didn't get its first hit until the eighth and scored its lone run in that frame when Francis Christy drove in Anthony Balderas with an RBI-single.

In the ninth, another RBI-single by Iriart plated Nulph to cap off the scoring at 4-1.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday as they open up a three-game series at Cuesta College, beginning at 2 p.m.
