Pirates go 1-2 at Mt. SAC tourney

WALNUT -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team went 1-2 this past weekend, playing three tough opponents at the Mt. San Antonio College Classic.

In the opener on Friday, OCC topped San Diego City College, 84-74, to advance to the championship semifinals.

After dropping their last matchup against the Knights just six days before, the Pirates (3-7) came back strong with a 10-point win on Friday, led by Brad Buchignani, who scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He was 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

Noah Prouse added 19 points, while Devaun Evans added 11 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists. Off of the bench, Lafayette Kittrell and Ahmon Metdals each tossed in 10.

In the semifinals against host Mt. San Antonio, Coast led by 17 at the half and still carried a 12-point lead (55-43) with just over 10 minutes left in the game, before the Mounties fought all the way back and tied the game at 65 with 5:05 remaining.

Mt. San Antonio finished the game with a 16-7 run and defeated Coast, 81-72. Buchignani again led the way with 19 points, while Prouse added 13 and Kittrell chipped in 10.

In the third-place game against Pacifica, Coast came up a point short and lost 70-69. Michael Niezner came off the bench to lead the Pirates with 13 points. Prouse added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Buchignani added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Piirates will return to action on Saturday at Miramar College, beginning at 5 p.m.
