Pirates outlast Chargers in double overtime!

CYPRESS -- Devaun Evans' layup with six seconds left in double overtime, pushed the Orange Coast College men's basketball team to a hard-fought 85-83 win over Cypress College on Friday night in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

Evans, who finished with a team-best 21 points and eight rebounds, scored the last six points for the Pirates (8-17, 2-6 in OEC) after trailing 83-80 with under two minutes remaining.

Noah Prouse, who scored the game-tying basket in the first overtime, scored 17 points for Coast, while Brad Buchignani added 15.

Coast had to withstand a 3-point barrage by the Chargers (7-17, 2-7), who nailed 14 3's on the night. David Gonzalez went 5-for-14 from downtown and finished with a game-high 24 points. Mark Townes added 18 points and Jerred Cook tossed in 13.

The Pirates led by as many as seven in the second half before Cypress would respond and force overtime when Jesse Henderson-Lewis tipped in a missed shot with 23 seconds left to tie things up at 62.

Cypress led 72-66 with 2:24 remaining before Jonah Ganz cut the lead in half with a 3-pointer, highlighting a 7-1 run as Coast tied things up at 73 to force a second overtime.

Much like the first OT, Coast trailed early on before another big 3-pointer by Ganz would get Coast back to within striking distance. This trey came with 2:15 left and cut the Chargers' lead down to one at 81-80.

That's when Evans went to work. After Cypress went back up by three, a layup and free throw by Evans tied the game at 83 and after a Cypress turnover, Coast played for one final shot and with six seconds left, Evans would put the Pirates up for good with a made layup.

Coast returns to action on Tuesday at Saddleback (7:30 p.m.) and at home on Thursday for Coaches vs. Cancer Night against Santa Ana (7:30 p.m.).
