Pirates fit to be tied in 2017

FULLERTON -- Another day, another stalemate for the Orange Coast College men's soccer team as the 2017 season continues to "draw" closer towards the end of the regular season. After earning a 2-2 tie with Irvine Valley on Friday, the Pirates battled host Fullerton to a 1-1 result on Tuesday.

OCC (2-1-7, 1-0-2 in Orange Empire Conference) battled the first-place Hornets (4-5-2, 2-0-2) to a scoreless tie in the first half, but took a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute when Nicholas Cardenas fed Achref Beldi with a nice pass and the freshman forward buried his shot into the back of the net, putting the Pirates in front.

But just seven minutes later, the Hornets responded and tied the game. From there, both teams had decent scoring chances down the stretch, but neither team could find the game-winner.

Sina Shahnazari was strong in goal for the Pirates, notching eight saves.

On Friday against the Lasers, Coast used a pair of goals by Cardenas (with assists from Jonathan Peixtoto and Eder Olivas) to earn the 2-2 draw with IVC. Four minutes after each goal by Cardenas, Juan Sebastian Oliva found the back of the net to keep pace with the Pirates. Shahnazari had three saves in the tie.

The Pirates will return to the OCC Soccer Complex on Friday against Santa Ana College, beginning for 3 p.m.
