Former Pirates excelling at four-year level

Three former members of the Orange Coast College men's volleyball program have continued their fine play at the four-year level, according to Pirate head coach Travis Turner.

Jordan Bailey, Braden Hall and Jeff Taylor, have accepted athletic scholarships to Morningside College in Iowa. Morningside is brand new Men's Volleyball program, competing in the NAIA.  The Mustangs won their first-ever match on Jan. 10 with all three OCC alumni in the starting lineup.

Taylor and Hall lead their team in kills with 14 and 12, respectively, while Jordan Bailey lead the offense with 42 assists.

"I am excited to see them continue their volleyball careers and education at the next level. As much as well will miss them, our goal is to have our athletes transfer to 4-year school, so I am very proud and happy for them," Turner said of his former players.

Another former alumnus, Kevin Burch, recently won the Division I Women's Volleyball National Championship with Penn State University as an assistant coach.

Burch, PSU's Director of Operations for the women's team, helped the Nittany Lions to their national title on Dec. 20.   Amazingly this was the SIXTH national championship that Burch has been a part of in his young career.

In 2011, as an undergraduate assistant, Burch helped Ohio State Men's Volleyball to their first-ever national championship.  He followed that up by winning three consecutive Division III national championships as an assistant coach with Springfield College's men's volleyball program from 2012-14. He also had a hand in UC Irvine's 2013 D-I men's national championship and in 2012, Burch was awarded the D-III National Assistant Coach of the Year.

"Kevin is a tremendous coach, but an even better guy. He is going to do big things in this game for a long time," Turner said.
