Pirates roll past Griffins in three-set sweep

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team, a team that started 0-3 to begin the season, is now one of the hottest teams in the state. In a matchup between two of the top teams in the Pacific Coast Conference, the Pirates made quick work of rival Grossmont and swept away the Griffins, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14, on Friday inside the Peterson Gym for their ninth straight win.

After opening the season with back-to-back five-set losses to El Camino and Long Beach and a four-set loss to Moorpark, the Pirates (9-3, 6-0 in PCC) have looked much more like last year's CCCAA state champions, dropping just two sets during their nine-match win streak.

Coast's offense, once again, led by freshman outside hitter Adrian Faitalia (20 kills), hit at an impressive .330 clip for the match against a Griffin team that had gone 8-1 over its last nine matches heading into Friday's showdown.

Kamaha'o Paio added 10 kills, while middle blocker Nick Amado added seven.

Grossmont, which had an astounding 22 hitting errors against the Pirates on Friday, was led offensively by Andrew Freiha (13 kills). No other Griffin player had more than three.

Alec Podrasky anchored the OCC defense with eight digs, while setter Steven Duhoux paced the offense with 35 assists.

It doesn't get any easier for the Pirates, who wrap up the first round of conference play at home against Irvine Valley on Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m. The Lasers (8-3, 6-1) are currently a half-match behind the Pirates for first place and enter Wednesday night's matchup winners of three straight and seven-of-eight.
