Pirates regroup, sweep past Lasers to claim second place in PCC

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team earned one more home match after closing out the regular season with an impressive 25-21, 27-25, 25-20, Pacific Coast Conference win over host Irvine Valley on Friday night.

The win clinched second place in the PCC standings for the Pirates (15-5, 12-2), one match ahead of the Lasers (13-5, 11-3). That means Coast will host its state quarterfinal matchup with Long Beach City College on Friday night at 6 p.m., while the Lasers must travel to El Camino College on Friday night at 6 p.m. to take on the Warriors. Grossmont (16-4, 13-1) defeated San Diego City College on Friday night in four sets to win the PCC title.

Adrian Faitalia led Coast with 13 kills and four blocks, while Nick Amado added eight kills and six blocks and Patrick Henry chipped in seven kills, nine digs and three blocks. Steven Duhoux dished out 29 assists, while Alec Podrasky notched 16 digs to anchor the Pirate defense.

The Pirates and Vikings will play their second match this year inside OCC's Peterson Gym, but this time, the hosts hope for a better result. Back on Jan. 30, Long Beach pulled out a hard-fought five-set win over OCC, 26-24, 25-27, 15-25, 25-20, 18-16.

Jeffrey Utupo led LBCC with 16 kills and 11 digs, while Alfonso Mata added 15 hills and 14 digs and Alejandro Albarran chipped in 10 kills and four block assists.

Faitalia was strong in OCC's lone matchup with the Vikings, slamming down 24 kills, while Amado added 11 kills and five total blocks.

The winner of Friday night's contest will earn a trip to San Diego City College for the 2015 California Community College Athletic Association's State Volleyball Championship semifinals on April 23 and 25.
