Pirates drop season-opener at El Camino

TORRANCE -- It wasn't the start the defending state champs wanted as the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team dropped a five-set decision at El Camino College on Wednesday night in both teams' season opener.

Despite a 2-1 lead in sets, the Pirates couldn't come up big down the stretch as the host Warriors rallied for a 26-24, 19-25, 32-34, 25-22, 15-13 nonconference win.

Adrian Faitalia led the Pirates with 22 kills, while Eric Baranek added 16 and Nick Amado chipped in 15 to go along with seven block assists. Libero Alex Podrasky racked up 18 digs, while setter Steven Duhoux dished out 53 assists.

For the Warriors, Peter Nordel had 15 kills, while Casey Wood and Cesar Medina each tacked on 13. Allen Sarinana and Bobby Romano combined for 21 digs, while Chris Griebnow chipped in 46 assists.

The Pirates were their own worst enemy as 25 service errors proved too much to overcome.

Coast will return to action on Friday against Long Beach City College inside the Peterson Gym, beginning at 6 p.m.
