Pirates go 2-2 over the weekend in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- The Orange Coast College softball team spent the weekend down in the greater San Diego area and in four games, the Pirates picked up a pair of wins over San Diego City on Saturday after dropping a pair at Southwestern College on Friday.

After a pair of tough losses to the Jaguars on Friday (6-1 and 2-1), the Pirates took on the Knights in a double-dip and rolled past the hosts, 17-3 and 9-1 (both in five innings) on Saturday.

Coast (5-3) pounded out 14 hits in the opener at SDCC and had four players (Chloe Visca, Blake Hesla, Jessica Scotty and Madison Taylor) combine for five hits, eight runs and 12 RBI. Sarah Hamre, Bronwyn Jarvis, Nala Osorio and Audrey Beck also had two hits apiece for the Pirates, while Taylor Berry picked up her second win of the season, allowing just one run over five innings with four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Coast led 2-1 after three innings, before the bats came to life with six runs in the fourth to blow the game open. Thanks to five SDCC errors, the Pirates took advantage of their opportunities and scored seven unearned runs in the game. The big hits came in the six-run fourth with a two-run single by Jarvis and a pinch-hit, three-run double off the bat of Ashley Bullock.

The pitching duo of Jordyn East and Danielle Votendahl combined to allow just one run on one hit with four walks and five strikeouts.

Coast will play at Grossmont College on Wednesday, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Wednesday, Feb. 14 against Santa Ana, also at 3 p.m.
