Pirates roll past Roadrunners, 6-1

COSTA MESA -- It was a solid, all-around game for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates cruised to a 6-1 nonconference win over visiting Rio Hondo on Saturday morning at the OCC Softball Complex.

Nala Osorio went 3-for-4 with two runs for the Pirates (14-15), while Madison Taylor added three hits, a run and an RBI.

While the OCC offense came through with 12 hits against the Roadrunners, the Pirate pitching tandem of Danielle Votendahl and Jordyn East took care of business and held the RHC offense in check. Votendahl started and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts. East picked up the win and held the Roadrunners to one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Coast grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Votendahl singled and came all the way around to score when the ball slipped past the Rio Hondo right fielder.

Shawna Aguerrebere came through with a one-out, RBI-double to left in the bottom of the second to put OCC up, 2-0.

The Pirates took advantage of a pair of RHC errors and picked up an RBI-single by Taylor to score a pair in the bottom of the third to grab a 4-0 lead.

An RBI-single by Brownwyn Jarvis put OCC up, 5-0 in the fourth before a sacrifice fly by Blake Hesla in the fifth put the Pirates ahead, 6-0.

Rio Hondo would break the shutout in the top of the seventh when Desiree Rhodes drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but East would coax a pop out to end the game one batter later.

The Pirates will return to Orange Empire Conference action on Tuesday at home against Santa Ana, beginning at 3 p.m.
