Pirates start strong, hold on to top Roadrunners

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team opened the home portion of the 2013 schedule on Wednesday with a 1-0 nonconference win over visiting Rio Hondo College.

It was the third straight shutout for the Pirates (2-0-1), winners of two straight following a scoreless tie in the season opener.

The game's lone goal came in the 12th minute when a breakout pass to Shelle Zito gave the Pirates a breakaway opportunity. Zito fed a cross-pass, which eluded RHC goalkeeper Katelyn Oshima and found teammate Sandy Jimenez, who tipped the ball into the empty net.

Coast would have a few more chances throughout the game, but Oshima, who finished with nine saves, would not allow and second goal past her the rest of the game.

OCC netminder Emily Harrier notched five saves -- none bigger than a pair of point-blank stops in the 82nd minute when the Roadrunners (2-1) had their best opportunity to tie the score. A cross-pass found its mark, but Harrier was in the right position to keep the ball out of the back of the net.

Anmarie Moreno helped anchor a Coast defense that has been carrying the team in the early part of the season.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against L.A. Harbor, beginning at 2 p.m.
