Offense comes alive as Pirates roll past Fullerton

COSTA MESA -- With the offense sputtering throughout the 2013 season, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team needed that "breakout" game and on Tuesday, the Pirates broke out early and often en route to a 6-1 win over visiting Fullerton College on Tuesday.

Karly Freeman notched a hat trick after Kamille Cawley opened the match with back-to-back goals for the Pirates (5-1-3, 2-1-2 in Orange Empire Conference). Danielle Dapello found the back of the net in the game's final minute of play to complete OCC's scoring.

After not scoring more than two goals in any of their previous eight contests, Coast put the offense in overdrive and kept the pressure on the Hornets (2-9, 2-5) throughout the afternoon.

Cawley ripped a pair of well-placed shots from the right-hand side and beat Hornets' goalkeeper Chantal Hagan short side both times to put Coast ahead 2-0 early in the first half. Devan Ellison and Dapello each picked up assists on Cawley's goals.

In the 21st minute, Ellison earned a second assist when she fed Freeman for the first of her three goals.

Freeman used a pair of defensive miscues by the Hornets to pick up high-percentage scoring opportunities and the freshman forward took advantage of both chances to put the Pirates in front, 5-0.

Fullerton found the back of the net in the 62nd minute to make it 5-1 before Kylee Stone fed a breaking Dapello a nice pass and the freshman midfielder slipped a shot past a charging Hagan on the final play of the match.

OCC will return to action on Friday at Golden West College, beginning at 3 p.m.
