Second-half goals prove costly for Pirates

COSTA MESA -- the Orange Coast College women's soccer team came up a pair of goals short on Friday as the Santiago Canyon College Hawks posted a 2-0 victory over the host Pirates at the OCC Soccer Complex.

In a hard-fought, defensive battle that yielded just seven shots on goal between the two teams, it came down to a pair of set plays for the Hawks, which were turned into goals.

After a scoreless first half of play, SCC (4-0-1, 1-0-1) went on the attack and earned a corner kick. SCC's Taylor Hollywood sent the CK into the box, but the Pirates headed the ball back to the corner. Hollywood again popped the ball back into scoring territory, where it deflected off of teammate Sam Jones and onto the foot of Kirsten Martin, who redirected the shot into the net in the game's 55th minute.

Just 10 minutes later, another corner kick off of the foot of Hollywood again bounced off of Jones. After a miscommunication by the Pirate defense, Amanda Gomez pounced on the ball and popped a shot past OCC netminder Emily Harrier to make it 2-0.

With a two-goal advantage, the SCC defense went into lockdown mode and prevented any serious threats by the Pirates (3-1-1, 1-1). OCC's best chance came in the first half when Anmarie Moreno sent in a long free kick that just missed the head of a Pirate teammate heading towards the goal.

Harrier finished with four saves, while SCC's netminder, Crystal Allen collected three saves.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at Cypress College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Friday against Santa Ana, also at 3 p.m.
