Pirates take care of business with 3-1 win over Hornets

COSTA MESA -- Sydney Powell added two more goals to her 2023 collection as the Orange Coast College women's soccer team cruised to a 3-1 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Fullerton College on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Powell scored goals Nos. 13 and 14 for the season, putting her in second place on the OEC leaderboard, trailing only Saddleback's Chloe Green, who has 20. Her 14 goals are eighth-most in the state, according to the CCCAA state leaders.

Katrina Shoga picked up OCC's third goal of the contest off a nice pass from Stephanie Serrato to help improve the Pirates' record to 10-4-2 overall, 5-2-1 in conference play.

Powell's first goal came in the 15th minute when she headed in a well-place corner kick off the foot of Leah Martinovich. Ten minutes into the second half, Powell drove down the right side and ripped a shot that was saved by FC's Nyla Contreras, but the OCC sophomore followed up and kicked in the loose ball over Contreras and into the back of the net, putting Coast up, 2-0.

Following Shoga's goal, Fullerton (2-10-1, 1-6-1) scored its lone goal when Yvonne Ventura ripped a high-level shot into the back of the net to make it a two-goal game with just over 10 minutes remaining.

But that would be it for the Hornet highlights as the Pirates finished the game with no further damage. Position player-turned-goalkeeper Rian Landavazo was not pushed too hard thanks to solid defense around her, but she notched three saves to preserve the win.

Coast will play at Cypress College on Tuesday before returning to the OCC Soccer Complex on Friday to take on Irvine Valley, beginning at 3 p.m.
