Powell's goal lifts Pirates over Seahawks, 1-0

COSTA MESA -- Sydney Powell did everything BUT score in the first half, but found the back of the net at the right time in the second half, helping the Orange Coast College women's soccer team to a 1-0 nonconference win over visiting L.A. Harbor on Tuesday night at LeBard Stadium.

It's been a strong start to the 2023 season for the Pirates, who improve their overall record to 4-1 with the win. The loss drops the Seahawks to 1-2-1.

Coast carried the action for the first 10 minutes of the first half with Powell peppering the LAHC goal area with shots, but each shot just missed their marks, leaving the Pirates off the scoreboard.

The Seahawks returned the favor and had a few opportunities of their own, but OCC goalkeeper Chloe Hernandez (four saves) made sure the ball stayed out of the net and both teams headed to halftime in a scoreless tie.

But that all changed in the 58th minute when Koko Tachiki slipped a perfect pass through the LAHC defense and onto the foot of Powell, who fought off a pair of defenders and rifled a shot into the upper part of the net to put the Pirates in the lead for good.

Again, a couple of late opportunities by the Seahawks were stopped by Hernandez and the Pirates ended the night with a hard-earned win.

It was Coast's first home match of the 2023 season and now, the Pirates head back on the road for four more matches, starting with Rio Hondo on Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. OCC's next home match will take place on Friday, Sept. 29 against Cypress, beginning at 3 p.m. at the OCC Soccer Complex.
