Pirates end strong, topple Rustlers, 3-1

COSTA MESA -- Stephanie Serrato's goal in the 64th minute proved to be the difference-maker for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team as the Pirates prevailed 2-1 over rival Golden West College on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Serrato's goal -- a beautiful header off a nice feed from Katrina Shoga -- was her second of the game and broke a 1-1 deadlock, giving Coast (8-3-1, 3-1-0 in the Orange Empire Conference) the lead for good. OCC wrapped things up with an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Rian Landavazo took a cross-pass from Jaslyn Cifuentes and finished into a wide-open net to make it 3-1.

Serrato's first tally of the contest came in the 18th minute when a corner kick by Leah Martinovich bounced off some bodies and found its way to Serrato's foot and then, into the back of the net.

Golden West (2-7-1, 0-4-0 in OEC) evened things up early in the second half when Jasmine Edalati scored off an assist from Jordan Havican.

Coast carried most of the match on the Rustlers' side of the field as indicated by a 14-2 margin in the corner kicks category.

Chloe Hernandez was credited with two saves for OCC, while the goalkeeping tandem of Chloe Miller and Peyton Griffin combined for four saves.

Coast returns to the road for three straight crucial OEC matches, beginning on Tuesday against Saddleback, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home contest will be on Friday, Oct. 20 against Fullerton, also at 3 p.m.
