Pirates cruise to 2-0 win over Lasers

COSTA MESA -- In a match that was not as close as the score might indicate, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team rolled to a 2-0 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Irvine Valley College on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

OCC (11-5-2, 6-3-1 in the OEC) outshot the Lasers (5-12, 4-6), 15-3 in the contest and carried the majority of the possession throughout the match. In spite of that strong effort, both teams were held scoreless through the first half of play.

Finally, in the 58th minute, a corner kick from Leah Martinovich found teammate Stephanie Serrato, who slid a pass to Kaitlyn Eckart, who found the back of the net, putting Coast up for good.

In the 78th minute, Ava Paez sent a nice pass towards the IVC goal, where Sydney Powell used her head to bank the pass into the net for her 15th goal of the season, putting the Pirates up 2-0.

That would be more than enough for the victory as the Lasers failed to even record a shot on goal as the Pirate defense clamped down and gave no openings throughout the afternoon.

Coast will return to action on Tuesday at Golden West College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home match will take place on Friday against Saddleback College, beginning at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
