Pirates battle Hawks to 1-1 tie

COSTA MESA -- It was another hard-fought women's soccer matchup between Orange Coast and Santiago Canyon on Tuesday. In the end, both teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The Pirates (12-6-3, 7-4-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) have given the powerhouse Hawks (14-2-3, 10-1-2) fits this season, having earned a 1-1 tie at SCC earlier in the season. It appeared early like the Pirates had the upper hand in things when Sydney Powell banged in a rebound off of the SCC goalkeeper to put Coast up 1-0. It was her 16th goal of the season, which is second-most in the OEC and top-15 in all of California community college women's soccer.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Hawks found another gear and brought constant pressure to the Pirates' defense, but the hosts were keeping the ball out of the net. But, the Hawks finally found the equalizer when Sloane De Torres placed a perfect shot into the upper-right corner of the goal in the 61st minute to level the match.

Both teams had opportunities to take leads, but neither club to do so. Late in the game, a shot by Clarissa Sullivan nearly found the upper part of the goal, but instead, the shot rang off the crossbar, keeping the match even.

OCC will wrap up the regular season at home against Santa Ana on Thursday, beginning at 3 p.m.
