OCC doubles dominate USTA/ITA Fall Regional

CERRITOS -- The calendar might say September, but there was some impressive performances turned in by a few Orange Coast College women's tennis players at the USTA/ITA Southern California Regional Championships on Sept. 20-22.

It was an All-OCC doubles final as the Pirate teams of Hali Dickson/Nikki Thornburg matched up against fellow teammates Nadine Baquiran and Sydney Farzadkish. Thornburg -- a transfer to OCC from Cypress College -- and freshman Dickson prevailed, 8-0, and qualified for the lone spot in the ITA Small College Championships, which will take place Oct. 10-13 at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers, Florida.

Dickson and Thornburg were one of the higher seeds in the tournament. Thornburg won the event in 2011 with fellow Charger teammate Chelsea Logan.

Baquiran and Farzadkish posted an impressive 8-6 win over No. 2 seeded Briana Bowers and Acacia Dettman of Riverside City College to reach the championship match.

In singles play, OCC had five players competing in the event. Dickson went the furthest among the Pirate competitors as she advanced to the semifinals before falling to Santa Monica's Kaoari Tsuda, 7-6, 6-2.
