Pirates blank Glendale 5-0 in SoCal Duals opener

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis made quick work of visiting Glendale College, shutting out the Vaqueros, 5-0, in the opening round of the Southern California Regional duals.

With the win, the fourth-seeded Pirates (13-2) will travel to Palm Desert to take on top-seeded College of the Desert on Tuesday, beginning at 2 p.m.

The contest started with doubles play and Coast started strong as Haley Dickson and Nikki Thornburg ran away with an 8-1 win. No. 2 doubles Nadine Baquiran and Mai Hashimoto prevailed, 8-3 and at No. 3 doubles, Sydney Farzadkish and Anh Pham cruised to an 8-2 win.

In singles, Baquiran and GC's Alexandra Amor were tied, 2-2, in the first set when Amor had to retire due to injury. At No. 4 singles, Hashimoto topped Ahsley Sumudio, 6-2, 6-2 to give OCC the win in the match.

On Thursday at Riverside City College, the Pirates will compete in the Orange Empire Conference Tournament for individual singles and doubles play. Among the seeded players for the Pirates include Dickson (4th), Thornburg (9th), Baquiran (12th) and Hashimoto (16th) in singles and Dickson/Thornburg (3rd), and Baquarian/Hashimoto (7th) in doubles.
