Pirates edge out Gauchos, 5-4

COSTA MESA -- In a hard-fought battle to the end, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Saddleback College on Thursday.

Coast (11-1, 7-1 in OEC) grabbed a 4-2 lead after singles play, led by the remarkable comeback by Nadine Baquiran, who overcame an 0-6 loss in the first set to rally past Kelsey Markle, 7-6, 6-1. Haley Dickson made quick work in her 6-0, 6-0 win, while Anh Pham followed Baquiran's script with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

In doubles, Saddleback made it 4-3 with a 9-8 doubles win, but the OCC team of Baquiran and Mai Hashimoto pulled out an 8-3 win to clinch the win for the Pirates.

Coast returns to action on Tuesday at Irvine Valley College, beginning at 2 p.m.
