Pirates make quick work of Cuyamaca, 9-0

COSTA MESA -- The opening to the 2014 season for the Orange Coast College women's tennis team was quick and impressive as the Pirates topped visiting Cuyamaca, 9-0, on Tuesday.

OCC won 72-of-74 games played in singles competition and swept all three doubles sets later in the afternoon.

Singles sweeps were turned in by Haley Dickson, Nadine Baquiran, Mai Hashimoto and Sydney Farzadkish.

In doubles, teams of Dickson/Nikki Thornburg, Baquiran/Farzadkish and Hashimoto/Yuri Choi each posted 8-0 wins.

The victory was the first for new head coach Michelle Esquivel, who took over after the retirement of longtime coach Janice Maran.

Coast returns to action on Thursday at home against Palomar, beginning at 2 p.m.
