Pirates deadlocked with Hawks for OEC's top spot

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA -- With just five matches remaining in the 2014 regular season for men's golf, Orange Coast College, Santiago Canyon and Riverside are in for one heck of a dogfight.

On Monday, all six OEC teams took to Tijeras Creek Golf Club (par 72) and in the end, Santiago Canyon edged out the Pirates by one stroke (367-368) to move into a first-place tie atop the OEC standings (28-7).

Saddleback shot a 377 for third place, while Riverside (380), Cypress (398) and Irvine Valley (407) round out the remaining team scores.

OCC's Marc Reyes shared the low-round of the day with SCC's Nico Mendoza -- both shot a 4-under-par 68.

All six Pirate golfers shot in the 70s, showing the depth of the four-time OEC champs. Michael Chen was next up with a 1-over 73, while Zach Olson carded a 75. Other solid Pirate scores were turned in by Jem Young (76), Zach Eddy (76) and Cody Kelly (79).

The Pirates will return to action on April 2 when they host the rest of the OEC at Santa Ana Country Club, beginning at 9 a.m.
