Pirates back on top after latest OEC event

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College men's golf team took advantage of pristine playing conditions and shot the lights out on Friday at Oak Creek Golf Club (par 71) to regain first place in the Orange Empire Conference standings.

Led by medalist Marc Reyes, the Pirates shot a team score of 2-over-par, 357 -- four shots better than Cypress and seven better than Santiago Canyon. Reyes cruised around the famed Irvine-based golf course and fired a 5-under 66 to lead all scorers. Friday's low-round score was his third medalist round of the season.

With the victory, the Pirates (41-9) move back into first place over the Hawks (40-10) with the upcoming OEC championships on the horizon. The two-round event will take place on Monday, April 28 at Los Serranos, beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Michael Chen and Zach Eddy also came in under par for OCC, each shooting 1-under 70s.

Zach Olson, shot a 74, Jem Young carded a 77 and Theron Ornt chipped in with an 82 for the Pirates.

If the Pirates finish ahead of the Hawks on Monday, it will give the Pirates their fifth straight Orange Empire Conference championship.
