Two golfers qualify for state championships!

POWAY -- Despite a disappointing third-place team finish at Monday's Southern California Regional Championship, two members of the Orange Coast College men's golf team have earned a spot at next week's state finals.

OCC freshmen Marc Reyes and Zach Eddy qualified for the California Community College Athletic Association's Men's Golf Championships after finishing in the top 12 during Monday's two-round event, held at StoneRidge Country Club.

Eddy was the most consistent golfer in the Pirates' lineup, shooting an even-par 71 and a 2-over 73 for a two-round total of 144.

Reyes opened Monday's action with a 1-under-par, 70, then followed that up with a 4-over 75 for a two-round total of 3-over, 145.

Both will compete at Riverside's Victoria Country Club on Monday, beginning at 7 a.m.

As for the rest of the Pirates, the team missed out on qualifying after finishing third overall at the Regional with a team score of 743. College of the Canyons won the event with a 728, while Riverside carded a 738. Only the top two teams qualify for the State Final Four.

Michael Chen carded a 74-75-149, as did Zach Lauderdale (75-74-149) for the Pirates, while Jem Young and and Zach Olson each shot a 157.

Coast started strong and was in second place with a 366, just two shots behind COC (364) and six ahead of RCC (372) heading into the afternoon session. Both the Cougars (360) and Tigers (366) improved on their afternoon rounds, while the Orange Empire Conference-champion Pirates stumbled down the stretch, shooting a 377.
