Nugent's goal lifts Pirates past Lasers, 1-0

COSTA MESA -- After a grinding 87 minutes of soccer, Chase Nugent made it all worth while as he scored the game's lone goal to lift the Orange Coast College men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Irvine Valley on Friday.

On the play, Brandon Bauman was dribbling the ball up the middle of the field, then, sent a perfect pass onto the foot of Nugent, who beat his defender and ripped a shot into the upper-right portion of the net for the game-winner.

The win lifted the Pirates' record to 10-3-3 overall, 6-2-2 in the Orange Empire Conference, while IVC drops to 6-9-2, 3-7-0.

OCC controlled the majority of the play, outshooting the Lasers 18-3, but several of Coast's shots missed the goal's frame.

After a scoreless first half, the Pirates continued to apply pressure. A near-goal by Dong-Gi Shin in the 73rd minute was called off due to an offside.

In the 83rd minute, Bauman ripped a shot high and to the left, but IVC goalkeeper Wilbur Olivera (five saves) made a fingertip save while flying through the air.

One minute before Nugent's game-winner, an OCC corner kick was nearly headed in by Tyler Rios, but Olivera was again at the right position for the stop.

OCC's goalkeeper Connor Nelson notched two saves for the shutout win.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at Golden West College, beginning at 5 p.m. The Pirates' next home match will be on Friday, Nov. 2 against rival Santa Ana, beginning at 3 p.m.
